Turks and Caicos Islands are a British territory in the Caribbean located southeast of the Bahamas and north-west of the island of Haiti . It consists of two islands (one of Turkey to the east and the Caicos to the west) separated from one another by the channel islands of Turkey ( Turks Island Passage ) with a width of about 35 km.
Caicos Islands: Middle Caicos, the largest island of Turkey and Caicos (and one of the least populated). North Caicos, the greenest of all the islands and found one where the largest colony of flamingos, Parrot Cay, a small island resort hosting the most exclusive and villas belonging to celebrities (including Keith Richards), Pine Cay, another small island of upscale resort, Providenciales, commonly known as Provo , the main tourist center and most populous island in Turkey and Caicos, & South Caicos, one of the less touristy islands, it is also the main center of the fishing industry.
Islands Turkey: Grand Turk, the largest and most populous island in Turkey, there are Cockburn Town, the capital of Turkey and Caicos. It would also, according to some, the island where Christopher Columbus stepped ashore for the first time in America (not in San Salvador, and the popular belief), Salt Cay, the southernmost inhabited island of the archipelago, and probably the most relaxed (because sparsely populated and tourist). Former center of the salt industry, the island would have been nominated to become one of World Heritage sites of UNESCO.
The plant environment and Caicos Islands Turkey consists of marshes and mangroves that have grown on a calcareous soil. These islands are under strong sunlight and suffer a marked aridity. They also suffer from hurricanes, frequent in the region. The tourism , fishing and offshore financial services are the main economic activities in the archipelago. Its main economic resources are natural lobster and conch. They are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom and are classified in the list of non-independent territories by the Committee of the United Nations decolonization.
For decades, leaders of the island have nevertheless begun discussions with the Canadian government with the aim of integrating the island within the Canadian confederation as the eleventh province which is problematic because it would require Islands a constitutional amendment, not wanted. In 2004, the Province of Nova Scotia invites the archipelago to join the province so that it can integrate into Canada without problems. The official language is English territory. However, given the growing number of Dominicans and Haitian immigrants, Spanish and Creole are increasingly common, especially on the island of Providenciales.
