The Gate of Heavenly Peace ( Chinese 天安门 / 天安门 Tiananmen ) on the north side of Tiananmen Square is the main entrance to the Forbidden City , the Imperial Palace in Beijing . It is the place from which Mao Zedong at the first October 1949 the People’s Republic of China proclaimed. Therefore, the gate will also appear in the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China.
The gate was built during the construction of the palace in 1417 under the third Ming Emperor Yongle built and at the end of the Ming Dynasty by the rebels under Li Zicheng burned. During the Qing Dynasty , it was rebuilt. In December 1969, the original, dilapidated gate in a secret until 2000 action on the pretext of renovation work has been completely demolished and rebuilt to April 1970 original with a few details. It has a total height of 33.7 meters and plays a central role in Chinese history. At the gate of heavenly peace proclamations were read out of the emperor and the imperial sacrifices brought here when he left the palace.
