The Terra Nova National Park is a national park of Canada in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The national park covers an area of 399.9 km . It is located northeast of Newfoundland , at the bottom of Bonavista Bay and the comprent Newman and the north shore of the fjord Clode . It is located on the Trans Canada Highway at 200 km west of St. Jean and 180 km east of Grand Falls-Windsor.
It is located almost entirely in the unorganized territories of Division No. 7 , with the exception of a small parcel of 359 acres which is located in the municipality of Port Blanford. It shares its boundaries with two marine protected areas , or the bird sanctuary of Terra Nova and the MPA Eastport .
The park is closely related to the marine, coastal ocean park is long of 238 km and no point of it is more than five kilometers from the ocean. It also includes 134 ponds and 86 streams. Water bodies, the most important is the pond Dunphy , covering 7% of the park and wetlands ( bogs and marshes ) 15% of the park.
Found in the park of Terra Nova 523 species of vascular plants . Its species, 427 are indigenous, and 89 were introduced in September are a hybrid. The forest dominated by black spruce ( Picea mariana ) cover about 70% of the park, there are also some small stands of balsam fir ( Abies balsamea ), of birch ( Betula papyrifera ), with red maple ( Acer rubrum ) and aspen ( Populus tremuloides ). About 7% of the park is covered with heath dominated mainly by the laurel ( Kalmia spp.) 6 .
National Park Terra Nova was created by Lee Wulff, a sporting American , who was recruited by the Ministry of Mines and Resources of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador to develop the industry of tourism in region.
The park was inaugurated on 12 April 1957 by the Honourable Jean Lesage then Minister responsible for national parks in the Canadian federal level.
