Kyoto, once the capital city of Japan, as well as the residence of the emperor from 794 till 1868, is now the seventh largest city in Japan. The city has suffered through much, numerous fires and of course World War II have taken much from this great city, considering all of this, historically there is much to see here.  There are a large number of shrines, temples and other historic structures that have survived the years, of all the cities in Japan, Kyoto is certainly among the richest both architecturally and historically.

Kyotois one of the most historically and culturally important cities in Japan . It lies to the west of the main Japanese island of Honshu in the metropolitan area of Kansai . Both characters of the present city name are each alone, ” Miyako “read and mean in Japanese literally means “royal residence”. Kyoto 794-1869 was the seat of the imperial court of Japan and is now the administrative center of Kyoto Prefecture . 14 temples and Shinto shrines were combined with three others in the neighboring towns of Uji and Ōtsu 1994 UNESCO – World Heritage Site Historic Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Shige) appointed.

Kyoto is about 400 kilometers southwest of Tōkyō in the Midwest of the Japanese main island of Honshu, about ten kilometers southwest of Lake Biwa and about 40 km from Osaka away. Because of its location in an open valley just to the south, the sultry air accumulates in the summer, the northern part of the city in winter is much colder than the neighboring cities of Osaka and Kobe .
