Jakarta is the capital of the Republic of Indonesia . With 9.58 million inhabitants (2010) in the city proper (ie excluding the suburban belt) is the largest city in Southeast Asia with about 28 million inhabitants (2010) in the metropolitan region ‘s largest metropolitan area in the country. The capital has the status of a province, ruled by a governor. It is the political, economic and cultural center and transportation hub of the country with universities, colleges, theaters and museums.
