The Shilin Stone Forest is a remarkable set of formations basaltic located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County in the province of Yunnan , People’s Republic of China , about 120 km. of Kunming , the provincial capital. The tall rocks seem to come from the ground like stalagmites and many seem petrified trees that together create the illusion of a forest made of stone. Since 2007 two parts of the site, the Stone Forest Naigu and the village of Suogeyi have been declared World Heritage of Unesco as part of the South China Karst .
