The Mantiqueira Mountains is a mountain range that spans three states of Brazil: São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. The saw has a geological formation dating from the era Archean comprising a rock mass which has a large area of the highlands, between one thousand and three thousand feet, along the currencies of the states of Minas Gerais , Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro . In the Mountain range there are several protected areas such as environmental protection area Mantiqueira Mountains, divided among three states, the Itatiaia National Park , split between Minas and Rio, the State Parks of the Sierra and Sierra Brigadier Parrot ( Minas Gerais) and Campos do Jordao (Sao Paulo).
Ten percent of the mountain land is in Rio de Janeiro. Thirty percent of the mountain is located in the state of São Paulo , and the remaining 60% are located in the state of Minas Gerais , which has its largest portion (derived from the region where the city of Barbacena and there is toward the southwest to meet the border with Rio de Janeiro and soon after, with St. Paul, where it becomes a natural border with the state of Minas Gerais to the mediations end of Joanópolis (Sao Paulo) and Extreme (Minas Gerais) and Finally, it ends in the city of Bragança.
The nearest capital of Sierra Mantiqueira is Sao Paulo , just by being the first 90 kilometers of the city located in the Mountain range, Bragança Paulista , the second is Belo Horizonte which is situated 170 km of the first city where the Serra da Mantiqueira is located: Barbacena and the third is the Rio de Janeiro which is located 198 km from the nearest town in the Mountain range of Viscount Maua district of the city of Resende.
