Alcatraz was once a high-security prison located on Alcatraz Island, about 2.4 kilometers off the coast of San Francisco. It served as a federal prison for 30 years, between 1933 and 1963. In 1972, it was named a national recreation area and became part of the National Parks system. Since then, it has received more than 10 million tourists who travel by boat from San Francisco’s Pier 41 just to see it.
