Reading is a city in the United Kingdom. She is a unitary authority within the county of Berkshire and is situated at the confluence of the Kennet and Thames River, halfway between London and Oxford. When in 870 the first inhabitants settled in Reading, moving by ship was significant: In Reading the small river Kennet flows into the Thames. Nowadays, you can cross the river Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal by a narrow boat house, a so-called Narrowboat, according to Bath or Bristol travel.
On 4 January 871 King fought here Ethelred of Wessex against Danish invasion army and lost the battle. The name derives from the Old English word reading read from the red to the German equivalent. The ea is pronounced as short e. The city is today an important commercial center and seat of the British headquarters of Microsoft. But one of the few UK solar energy company, Suntaics has its headquarters here.
Known worldwide, the city is above all through the “Reading Festival”. A rock festival held annually, attracting tens of thousands of spectators and usually spectators. In 1998 built Madejski Stadium to play the football -club Reading FC and the Rugby Union Club London Irish.
