The archipelago of Raja Ampat Islands is an archipelago of Indonesia located northwest of the peninsula Doberai (or Bird’s Head), northwest of the island of New Guinea . Administratively, the archipelago belongs to the province of West Papua , formerly Irian Jaya.
It consists of four main islands, Misool , Salawati , Batanta and Waigeo and another 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals.
Not far away, is the largest marine national park in Indonesia, the national maritime park Gulf of Cenderawasih , whose total area (land and sea) is approximately 40,000 km ².
