Pompeii was an ancient city in Campania, on the Gulf of Naples, situated, like Herculaneum and Stabiae, by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 is set AD. In his seven hundred year history of Pompeii was inhabited plateau formed, Samnites, Greeks, Etruscans and Romans and marked. In an eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 the city was spilled, thereby largely preserved and forgotten over time. After its rediscovery in the 18th Century began the second story of the city, in the course of Pompeii became a central object of archeology and the study of the ancient world. Pompeii, one of the best preserved ancient city ruins, became a well-known in modern times, and strong rezipierten term.
Pompeii is located in the Italian countryside of Campania, at the foot of Vesuvius, at the mouth of the river Sarno in the Gulf of Naples, just off the highway A3. The city was built on a previous outbreaks caused by Lavaplateau, the southern and western parts of the steep to the north and east, however, fell only slightly. Reconstructions have revealed that the city in ancient times was much closer to the sea (700 meters at the time) than it is today. The mouth of the Sarno was navigable by apparently lagoons protected and served early Greek and Phoenician sailors as a safe haven and transit point for their goods. In addition, the ground was in the region, not least because of the earlier eruptions of Vesuvius very fruitful.
