Palermo is the capital of the autonomous region Sicily and the province of Palermo. It lies on a bay on the north coast of Sicily. In the 8th Century BC, founded the city experienced primarily under the domination of the Arabs and the Normans and the Hohenstaufen heyday. Today, Palermo with 655 875 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2010) of Italy’s fifth-largest city and the political and cultural center in Sicily. Current mayor Leoluca Orlando, the 21 May 2012 was the fourth time elected mayor.
The city lies on a bay of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the north coast of Sicily. It is bordered to the north of the bay about 600 meters high Monte Pellegrino, on the east by Mount Catalfano. The plain between the mountains is Italian Conca d’Oro (“Golden Shell”) called, probably because of the orange groves that surrounded Palermo at the time of Arab domination. Today the city extends over almost the entire Conca d’Oro from. The level is considered to be very fruitful.
Palermo is a conurbation and is 659 433 inhabitants (2009) in the core city and just over one million inhabitants in the metropolitan region, the largest city in Sicily. In addition to the urban Quarters and Mandamenti include the following frazioni in the outskirts of the town: Acqua dei Corsari, Altarello, Aquino, Arenella, Bandita, Boccadifalco, Brancaccio, Ciaculli, Mezzomonreale, Mondello, Pallavicino, Partanna, Pomara, Resuttana, San Lorenzo, Sanctuary Santa Rosalia, Sferracavallo, Tommaso Natale, Virgin Mary, Villa Grazia.
Palermo is part of the “Regione Agraria n 13 – Pianura Conca d’Oro” and is a member of the local associations’ Associazione Italiana ciclabili Città”, “Associazione Nazionale Città del Pesce di Mare” and “Associazione per la Citta Italiane mobilità sostenibile e lo sviluppo trasporti dei”. Palermo is divided into eight districts (circoscrizioni divided), which in turn in 34 districts (quartieri) are divided. The neighboring communities of Palermo are Altofonte, Belmonte Mezzagno, Ficarazzi, Isola delle Femmine, Misilmeri, Monreale, Torretta and Villabate.
