Netherlands The Netherlands is a parliamentary monarchy and part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Located in the north western Europe lying land by the North Sea in the north and west, Belgium to the south and Germany in the east. Together with Belgium and Luxembourg are the Netherlands, the Benelux countries. The capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam, the seat of government is The Hague. The Netherlands also include the three Caribbean islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.
The official and spoken language in the common Dutch name of the country is Nederland (singular), while in Standard German, the country Netherlands (plural) and is often colloquially as Holland is named. The name Holland only really refers to the northwestern part of the country, the former province of Holland as the most important province of the Dutch Republic. Since the mid- 19th Century has divided the province into two provinces, North Holland (capital Haarlem) and South Holland (capital of The Hague). The Dutch used the expression Holland primarily for these two provinces. Otherwise, Holland rather an ironic self-description. Even football is the self-designation Holland, for example in the battle Hup Holland Hup.
Outside the Netherlands, the Dutch are usually referred to as the “Dutchman” and the Dutch tourism industry and other economic market throughout the country as the Netherlands (both in English and in German standard). Dutch, who are not from the region of Holland harbor, usually a certain dislike of the name Holland for The Netherlands and Dutch for the Dutch.
