Maputo is the capital of Mozambique to Delagoa Bay on the Indian Ocean. Although Inhaca Island may be considered the major attraction, the mainland also has a number of fine beaches in Mozambique. Surfers, in particular, will be drawn to the big waves of Praia da Macaneta which can be reached by boat from Maputo. The 117 km journey to the golden sands of Ponta do Ouro requires a 4×4 vehicle while just 5 km north from there is the beautiful beach of Ponta Malongane.
TAP offers a direct flight from Lisbon to Maputo. It is often cheaper to travel via Johannesburg. From Johannesburg there are several daily flights with South African Airways or Lineas Aereas de Mocambique (LAM). Maputo is further connected via Durban with South African Airlink, as well as Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya by LAM.
Trains connect Johannesburg and Pretoria via Nelspruit to Maputo and Ressano Garcia border crossing. From Durban to Maputo also trains over Swaziland.
