Kowloon is the largest part of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, the People’s Republic of China , located in the southern part of the north of Hong Kong, Iceland peninsula of Kowloon Peninsula . Its population is 2,021,669 (as of 1 January 2005). Kowloon is not to be confused with the respective District Kowloon City .
The name comes from Kowloon’s last emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty , who was on the run in the area of present-day Hong Kong. Standing on a mountain, he said, according to legend, his companions: ” I see eight dragons . “And he meant the eight mountains of Hong Kong. One of his remaining mandarin said: ” . I saw nine dragons “The ninth was the emperor, who stood before him, for the dragon in Chinese culture symbol for the emperor.
The dragon is the only animal of Chinese astrology , which is to be regarded as a mythical creature, it is composed of nine animals. The number nine is on the Chinese numerology, the number of the emperor. “Nine Dragons” which means in Chinese “Jiulong” ( abbreviation :九龙, in Cantonese “gáuhlùhng” characters long :九龙). Hence the name “Kowloon”.
Kowloon, bordered to the east by the Lei Yue Mun Passage, west of Mei Foo Sun Chuen and Stonecutters Iceland in the north of Tate’s Cairn and Lion Rock and the south by the Victoria Harbour . Commercial center of the district is the central Nathan Road. The subway line Tsuen Wan Line goes directly through Kowloon. The promenade around the “Kowloon Public Pier”, the “Space Museum” and “Space Theatre” in the south of Salisbury Road is due to tourists at the nightly light show on the skyscrapers of the skyline of Hong Kong popular Iceland. Important road is the East Kowloon Corridor .
