Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnamese Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh is the largest city in Vietnam . The entire administrative area of the city live 7.1 million people (Census 2009). It is not a contiguous urban area, but is – with its outside the central city more comparable to a small province – dominating rural settlement pattern. The town lies just north of the Mekong Delta on the west bank of the Saigon River . Under its old name Sài Gòn (Saigon) it was up to the April 1975 capital of the Republic of Vietnam . She is an industrial city transport hub and cultural center with universities, theaters, cinemas, museums and monuments.
Ho Chi Minh City was named in 1976 after North and South Vietnam were reunited. She is abroad is still known under its old name Saigon. Abbreviation for the name of the Vietnamese Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is often Sài Gòn called, although it officially marks only the first district of Saigon City.
The city was to Ho Chi Minh named, who proclaimed in September 1945, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and later took over the leadership of the country as head of state and prime minister. After the division of Vietnam as a result of the Indochina War in 1954 he became president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam .
The town lies just north of the Mekong Delta on the west bank of the Saigon River and is an average of 19 meters above sea level. The distance to the South China Sea (Vietnamese: East Sea) is about 40 kilometers. The administrative city covers an area of 2095 square kilometers. The distance from the northernmost part (village in Phu My Hung, district of Cu Chi) to the southernmost part of the urban area (village of Long Hoa district of Can Gio) is 120 kilometers from the eastern part (area Long Binh, District 9) to the westernmost part (village Binh Chanh, Binh Chanh district) 46 kilometers. South of the city lead the twin rivers of the Mekong , and Tiền Giang or Sông Tiền (“Upper Mekong”) and Hau Giang and Song Hau (“Lower Mekong”) named in the widened over 70,000 square kilometers of vast Mekong Delta in the South China Sea (in Vietnam: East Sea).
