Hat Yai is a large city in Thailand . It is located in the southern region of Thailand, belonging to Songkhla province and is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Hat Yai . The name of Hat Yai is the short form of Ma Hat Yai ( มะ หาดใหญ่ , Artocarpus lacucha ), which translates as “Big Ma Hat tree” means.
The city is located in the south, about 55 kilometers from the border with Malaysia removed. With about 187 920 inhabitants (2000 census) is the largest city of Hat Yai, Songkhla province, but not its capital.The town lies on the railway line , from Bangkok through Malaysia to Singapore leads. The international railway station in Hat Yai is the largest in Southern Thailand . Here are 28 trains per day handled, 26 trains of the SRT ( State Railway of Thailand ) and two (Ekspres Langawi) of KTMB of Malaysia.
On the outskirts there is the international airport in Hat Yai ( IATA code : HDY).In Hat Yai is the largest campus of the Prince of Songkhla University . There is also a Buddhist university since 2002, the Mahapanya Vidayalai .
