The City Council is bordered on the north by the Waimakariri District , west of the Selwyn District and the east by the Pacific Ocean . Closeby locations include Kaiapoi , Rangiora , Lincoln , Rolleston , Prebbleton and West Molton .

The New Zealand Bureau of Statistics 2010 published an estimate of 390 300 inhabitants. This is the city after Auckland, New Zealand’s second largest and the largest in the South Island. The region, however, is the third largest population in the country behind Auckland and Wellington .
