Africa is the second-largest and second-most-populated continent in the world. It comprises 20.4% of the Earth’s total land area or about six percent of the total surface, covering an area of 30.2 million square kilometers. It is home to more than one billion people, or about 15% of the total human population.
It is separated from Europe by the Mediterranean Sea, which is located to its north, and it is connected to Asia by the Isthmus of Suez. The Red Sea and the Suez Canal are to its northeast, and the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean are situated to its southeast and west, respectively.
The African continent is made up of 54 countries, nine territories, and three states, which are divided into five geographic sub-regions — Northern Africa, which includes countries along the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea such as Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia; Southern Africa, which consists of countries like Swaziland, South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, and Botswana; Eastern Africa, where majority of the African nations, like Mauritius, Kenya, Malawi, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe, belong to; Western Africa, which is made up of the tropical countries on the coast of the Atlantic such as Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone; and Central Africa, where countries like Angola, Cameroon, Congo, and Gabon are located.
Algeria is the largest African country, while Seychelles, a 115-island archipelago in the Indian Ocean, is the smallest.
