Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab world . – From the Egyptian city often simply using the country name is مصر , high Arab Misr , Egyptian Arabic Masr – called. Cairo is the political, economic and cultural center of Egypt and the Arab world . The city is home to the Egyptian Government, the Parliament , all governmental and religious authorities, central ( Mogamma ) as well as numerous diplomatic missions. Cairo is Egypt’s most important transport hub and has many universities, colleges, theaters, museums and monuments. The old city of Cairo’s Islamic architecture and is an ensemble since 1979 by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site recognized. The city has the status of a province, ruled by a governor, appointed by the president.

Cairo has 7.9 million inhabitants in the city administrative area (2008) and the metropolitan region , with approximately 16.2 million inhabitants (2009) from Lagos in Nigeria , the largest in Africa. In Egypt, however, there is no reporting requirement, so the figures given population projections based on census results show. Unofficial estimates put up to 25 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, which would represent nearly a third of the total population of Egypt.
