Bulgaria is a republic in southeastern Europe, with about 7.3 million inhabitants. Bulgaria’s EU and NATO member. The Republic of Bulgaria is situated in the east of the Balkan Peninsula. Bulgaria is bordered to the north by Romania, on the west by Serbia and Macedonia to the south with Greece and Turkey. To the east is the Black Sea, the natural border. Capital and seat of government of the Republic of Bulgaria is Sofia. Other important economic, administrative and cultural centers are the cities of Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Ruse and Stara Zagora.
The territory of Bulgaria is two-thirds of the plains, by the rivers Danube and Maritsa are formed with its numerous tributaries. This is marked by two major mountain ranges: the Balkan Mountains (Bulgarian Стара Планина / Stara Planina old mountain) and the Rhodopes. The highest elevations are the mountains of the Balkan mountain Botev (2376 m) and the Tschumerna (1536 m). The north of the Balkan Mountains situated Danube Plain is bordered by the Danube, which here represents the state border with Romania. In it lie the cities of Pleven, Razgrad, Ruse and Shumen and Varna on the Black Sea.
South of the Balkan Mountains lies the Upper Thracian Plain, also known as Maritza level. This means Bulgarian basin, the cities of Plovdiv and Stara Zagora and Burgas on the Black Sea find. This level is in the west and south by the Rhodopes and the mountain Sakar and beach damage to the south. The highest peak in the Rhodopes is the mountain Perelik Large (2,191 m). In the southwest of the country with the Rila – and Pirin Mountains two other high mountains with peaks 2000-3000 m altitude, where the mountain Musala (2,925 m) is the highest in the entire Balkan peninsula. Bulgaria has three National, (Rila, Central Balkan Mountains and Pirin), eleven nature parks and 55 nature reserves.
