The National Stadium is on 18 April 2008 opened the Olympic Stadium of the 2008 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing . It is part of the Olympic Green (Olympic Park). The Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron , which already includes the Munich Allianz Arena and the Basel St. Jakob-Park built, designed the National Stadium. In collaboration with the China Architecture Design & Research Group , Arupsport and the contemporary artist Ai Weiwei , they went in 2002 as the winner of an international architectural competition. The building is 330 meters long, 220 meters wide and 69.2 meters high. The construction costs amount to about 3.5 billion yuan (325 million € ). Because of its shape, the stadium nicknamed the “Bird’s Nest” has. Jacques Herzog hopes that “this building will be for Beijing what the Eiffel Tower of Paris is “.
During the Olympic Games, the stadium had a capacity of 91,000 spectators, which was reduced to 80,000 after the event. Thus, the construction can be operated economically for the Olympic Games and continues to attract visitors, according to planning as well as restaurants, offices and shops are planned.
