Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani Azərbaycan) is a landlocked country in Western Asia between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus. Today’s territory corresponds to the northern part of the historic region of Azerbaijan, whose southern section is a region of the same in Iran is. Azerbaijan is bordered by Russia (Dagestan), on the northwest by Georgia, on the south by Iran and the west by Armenia and – through the exclave of Nakhichevan – the Turkey.
The exclave of Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic and is separated by a strip of Armenian territory from Azerbaijani heartland.
